Hurricane Dorian is the second strongest Atlantic storm on record (part of a larger, worrying trend—but that’s another article) and experts are urging caution for those in the storm’s path. The damage inflicted on the Bahamas is already being described as “catastrophic” and as images and videos pour in of those who’ve had their lives overturned by the storm, including the estimated 13,000 homes that were severely damaged or destroyed, many are looking for ways to get involved in the rescue operation. If you’re one of them, here are a few organizations doing good work and ways you can help them do it.
Bahamas Red Cross is already on the ground, and they’re looking for donations. Nonperishable goods, baby supplies and bedding are in high demand right now. Go here to learn more.

Bahamas Relief is looking for toiletries, diapers, canned goods, cleaning supplies, tents, power generators and, crucially, water. They stress that they don’t need clothes at the moment. Go here to learn more.

The International Medical Corps is delivering emergency healthcare to those in medical emergencies in the Bahamas. You can donate to their efforts here.

World Central Kitchen was started by famed D.C. chef José Andrés to serve food to those displaced by natural disasters. His organization shows up after disasters have moved on to provide meals for those affected by them. Andrés is already in the Bahamas, and his organization is accepting donations now.

R.E.M. releases never-before-heard song to raise funds for Bahamas hurricane relief

Iconic alternative rock band R.E.M. has shared previously unreleased song “Fascinating” to benefit global organization Mercy Corps’ Hurricane Dorian relief and recovery efforts in the Bahamas. Band members Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe recorded “Fascinating” in 2004 at Nassau’s Compass Point Studios. It is now available for download for the first time via: Fans can stream the song for free on Bandcamp and download it for a minimum donation of $2 or an amount of their choosing. Proceeds will go directly to Mercy Corps’ emergency response and recovery efforts in the Bahamas.  “Fascinating” first appeared on the original master of 2001’s Reveal before being cut last minute, and, in fact, was singer Michael Stipe’s favorite song from the Reveal sessions (according to guitarist Peter Buck’s recollection, as chronicled in David Buckley’s R.E.M. biography, Fiction). “It’s really beautiful,” bassist/keyboardist Mike Mills told Buckley. “It has a flute, oboe…

Rachel Taylor, lead vocalist of indie pop act He Is We, has officially received a verdict of not guilty, exonerating her of the Sexual Assault allegation from 2017. The verdict followed a one-day jury trial held on June 4, 2019 in Jamestown, North Dakota. The verdict, which certified Taylor’s innocence of the criminal charge of Sexual assault, was met with a feeling of gratefulness and vindication by Taylor who had maintained her innocence since the charge was levied against her in September of 2017.

The details of the case revealed that the accuser, who was a newly hired musician for a He Is We tour in 2017, claimed Taylor had touched the side of her torso and her buttocks over a blanket while they shared a bed and a room with two other touring band members. The other two occupants of the motel room reported not seeing any criminal activity and the trial testimony by the accuser was contradicted numerous times by one of the touring band members who testified under oath during the tri…
